HAPPY RACE DAY! especially to everyone who makes Carrara Media possible. Last year was easily our most prolific, both on Substack and in book publishing. The newsletter totaled over 30,000 views, and we released five new titles, too!
This year we’re starting off strong. I’m extremely proud to announce our new project with Larry Chen, car culture icon. His book ‘Life At Shutter Speed’ will catalog the last 20 years of his career, featuring 2,000 photos over 400 pages.
‘Life At Shutter Speed’ will release in mid-2025, and you can preorder the Standard Edition, or the signed and numbered Limited Edition, right now.
Year-End Recap
In 2024 we had a lot of incredible moments:
We published excerpts of the first seven chapters of Cult of GT-R, my 2023 book on the phenomenon of the Nissan Skyline GT-R.
We also reported live from car culture eventsn like King of the Hammers, the R’s Day event at Laguna Seca and GT-R Festival in Texas.
We warned about the dangers of private equity, and then broke the news of Autoblog’s demise and brought truth to the WheelPros saga.
We had live dispatches from Tokyo Auto Salon, and from Pebble Beach, and a four-part series from SEMA.
It was, frankly, an insane year.
The torrent of news from the car culture world doesn’t stop, and I tried to recap it, and provide independent reporting on it, as best I could.
I’m excited to keep this going in 2025. It’s needed more than ever. At the same time, we’re going to continue publishing titles with high-profile people like Larry Chen, and with “outside the box” people like Kelly Conroy.
But we’re going to do it smarter.
After I got back from back-to-back weekends at SEMA, Radwood and GT-R Festival, the piece of content that resonated with me most was this video:
Chris De Jager gave up everything to chase a dream in Japan. And he made it. He found a community and built a following. The stress, however, took its toll.
The final scenes in this video haunted me. I didn’t know Chris, and I don’t know what demons he faced. But I can guess the feelings he held inside.
I want people to remember that cars and motorsports are supposed to be fun — but that doesn’t mean it’s jolly all the time. I can be extremely grateful and at the same time realize I need to prioritize myself more in 2025.
So here’s to more books, more scoops and more newsletters in 2025. And here’s also to taking breaks, to savoring moments, and to smelling the roses.
I have so much to do this year. And I intend to do it for Chris.
